@CanesFutbol Captain's Corner: Nov. 9, 2015
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The captains of the University of Miami soccer team for the 2015 season are writing a blog for HurricaneSports.com this year called Captain’s Corner.
With the Hurricanes’ 2015-16 campaign now complete, five seniors have their collegiate soccer careers in the rearview mirror. Monday, one of those players, midfielder Erin McGovern, reflects on her five years at Miami and all it entailed . . .
Hey, Canes fans! Unfortunately, our season has come to an end. We played UNC at home on Oct. 31 and it was senior night. Despite a loss, it was a very memorable day for us seniors. Our staff and teammates organized a great ceremony to honor us seniors and it gave me time to reflect back on my five years playing for this team.
While there were many ups and downs along the way, I am truly grateful for the opportunity that I had to represent The U for five years. I experienced many coaching changes, injuries and tough seasons, but the life lessons I have learned and the friendships I have made will stick with me for a lifetime. I want to thank the coaching staff—Mary-Frances, Kate and Tim—for believing in me these past couple years and giving me the opportunity to take my fifth year. I have grown so much because of them and I can’t thank them enough.
I want to thank my family for their continuous support and their dedication to travel all over the country to watch me play. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Finally, I want to thank my teammates for being my family away from home. The long drives, brutal practices and tough losses were all worth it with these girls by my side.
It’s hard to believe that my 17-year soccer career is officially over. I love this game for everything it has taught me and given me along the way. I would not be the same person today without this game. So a little advice to the young readers reading this: never take this game for granted. Put everything you have into this sport and it will give you the same in return.
Thank you to everyone who continued to read these blogs week after week! I am so excited for the future of this program and I can’t wait to watch all the success that this team has in store. Go Canes!
