@CanesFutbol Drops Road Match at Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. The University of Miami soccer team had its winning streak come to a halt at three in a row Friday night at Wake Forest.

The Hurricanes fell 3-0 to the Demon Deacons at Spry Stadium in the first match of ACC play conference-wide.

“Wake Forest was better today at finishing in front of the goal than us,” Miami head coach Mary-Frances Monroe said. “I feel as though we had more dangerous chances and couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net. Unfortunately, that can’t happen in this league. Every game will be as competitive as this game as we move forward.”

Forward Sarah Medina opened the scoring for Wake Forest (4-2-2, 1-0-0 ACC) in the ninth minute. The sophomore received a pass from junior midfielder Kendall Fischlein and beat Miami redshirt freshman goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce, who had gone over 307 minutes without allowing a goal off anything but a penalty kick. Freshman defender Kate Ravenna also earned an assist on the goal.

The action went back-and-forth for quite some time, with the score remaining 1-0 as the teams headed to the locker room for halftime. It continued to be a seesaw affair into the second half, but that changed in just a matter of minutes.

Ravenna played a ball into the box and sophomore forward Kahla Seymour tapped it on to freshman midfielder Bayley Feist, who put it into the net. Just four minutes later the Demon Deacons scored again when a dangerous ball sent into the six-yard box went off the foot of a Hurricane defender past Tullis-Joyce, making it 3-0.

Miami (3-5-0, 0-1-0 ACC) logged a dozen shots in the match and forced Wake Forest freshman goalkeeper Nonie Frishetteto to make six saves. The Hurricanes also held a 7-5 edge in corner kicks in the match.

Tullis-Joyce set a career high with six saves, while freshman defender Maisie Baker became the lone Hurricane to play 90 minutes in all eight matches this season.

The Hurricanes will be off this Sunday and then will resume conference play Thursday, Sept. 24 at Louisville (3-3-1) at 7:00 p.m., with the action broadcast on ESPN3.
