The Quote
“Well they were terrific. I thought [Angel] Rodriguez was sensational. He not only scored, but he controlled the game. It’s one of the best performances I’ve seen in Cameron from an opposing player. Their whole team played well, but he really set the tone in how well he played. He was great—not good—he was great. “
– Duke Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski, following Miami’s 90-74 win on Jan. 13
Reed Clutch from Distance
Sophomore Davon Reed is knocking down 51.2 percent of his shots from long range overall, while notching a 57.1 percent (20-35) clip from three in ACC games. He leads the team with 20 3-pointers in league games and despite only playing 16 of 24 games (due to injury), he is fourth on the team with 21 from long range overall. He has hit a 3-pointer in eight-straight games, and for the season has six games with multiple threes, topping out with five against Louisville.
Three Canes Shooting Better than 50 Percent
Junior Sheldon McClellan and sophomores Tonye Jekiri and Davon Reed are all hitting at least 50 percent of their shots this season. In all games, McClellan is 122-240 from the field for a 50.8 percent clip. Jekiri is at 51.7 percent ( 78-151) and Reed is hitting a team-best 53.6 percent (37-69) in his 16 games played. In ACC outings, Reed is sizzling with his 58.6 percent (34-58) from the field.
Former UM Assistant Coach’s Son Plays for BC
Former Miami assistant Coach Cesar Odio is the father of current Boston College Eagle Eddie Odio. Cesar was on the UM staff three seasons, including the 1984-85 practice season, then the 1985-86 and 1986-87 seasons, Miami’s first years back after having a dormant program for 15 years. Odio has also coached at Barry University, Miami-Dade CC, Florida Southern College and Santa Fe High School (Lakeland, Fla.), and played at both Florida Southern and Christopher Columbus High in Miami.
McClellan Lighting Up the Net
As national stats on Feb. 9, guard Sheldon McClellan was hitting 51.1 percent of his field goals, which was the …
* Top shooting percentage in the nation by a guard in the Power 5 conferences
* 12th-best shooting percentage by a guard in the nation
* 69th-best shooting percentage in the nation (all positions)
* Top shooting percentage by a guard in the ACC
The Canes are 11-0 when McClellan shoots 50 percent or better. He is one of 28 guards in the nation to score 31+ points in a game this season and one of four guards in the ACC to score 31+ points in a game this season. Among guards, he is eighth in the ACC in scoring, and in 13 games he has scored 15+ points. He has posted two double-doubles – 16p, 10r vs. NC State, 31p, 11r at Charlotte – and has scored 1172 career points in three collegiate seasons.
