#ProCanes Report: Men's Basketball

Three former University of Miami men’s basketball players are currently on NBA rosters while many other Canes are playing overseas. Check out the list of ProCanes below. 

NBA

James Jones-Cleveland Cavaliers- Former Miami shooting guard has signed a one-year deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers. In four preseason games with the Cavs, Jones averaged 4.5 points, hitting 45.5 percent from the field, and shooting 62.5 percent from distance in 10.0 minutes per game. In his six seasons with the Miami Heat, Jones won back-to-back championships. Last season alone Jones shot 51.9 percent from three, which was the highest percentage on the Miami Heat roster. As a Miami Hurricane Jones started 89 consecutive games ranking third on the all-time list and scored more than 1,000 points (1,356).

Shane Larkin-New York Knicks- Former University of Miami point guard Shane Larkin recently signed a three-year deal to play with the New York Knicks through 2017. In seven preseason games, Larkin has averaged 4.3 points, 1.6 assists and 2.1 rebounds per game for the Knicks. Larkin was formerly drafted by Atlanta, then immediately traded to the Dallas Mavericks in the 2013 NBA Draft. An ankle injury plagued the beginning of his rookie season, but Larkin ended the year playing in 48 games averaging 2.8 points, 1.5 assists, while shooting 31.6 percent from distance. During his tenure at UM, Larkin averaged 11.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.8 steals, and was named the 2012-2013 ACC Player of the Year.

John Salmons- New Orleans Pelicans- John Salmons is currently playing for the New Orleans Pelicans, where he will bring experience and leadership to a young group of guys. In six preseason games, Salmons has averaged 1.5 points and 1.5 rebounds in 13.5 minutes per game. During the 2013-2014 season with the Sacramento Kings and Toronto Raptors, Salmons averaged 5.2 points, 2.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 0.6 steals. During Salmons’ career at Miami, he totaled 1287 career points, 687 rebounds, 433 assists and 192 steals.

Overseas

Garrius Adams-Liege (Belgium) – Adams, a recent UM graduate (2009-2014), is currently playing for the Belgium team Liege. Though the team has only played limited games, Adams is averaging 13.5 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.0 assists as the team’s starting shooting guard. In his final season at Miami, Adams lead the team in total steals (42) and assists (95).

Brian Asbury-A.E Sao Jose/Unimed/Vinac (Brazil) – Former UM forward Brian Asbury is currently playing in Brazil for S. Jose/UNIMED. Asbury is playing the small forward position this season and is considered to be one of the team’s top players. Last season Asbury played in Israel for Hapoel where she shot over 50 percent from the field and averaged 12.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.2 steals. In Asbury’s last season as a Hurricane he played in 34 games, starting 14, and scored double figures 15 times.

Rion Brown- Hapoel T-A (Israel) – Brown, a former UM grad (2010-2014) is currently listed on Hapoel (Israel) roster for the 2014-2015 season. Prior to being signed to Hapoel, Brown had numerous workouts with NBA teams such as Miami Heat and Charlotte Hornets. Rion Brown is playing alongside former Miami Hurricanes teammate Durand Scott. In four regular season games, Brown has averaged 6.8 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. As a Hurricane, Brown was a part of the 2012-13 team that won the ACC regular season and tournament title. During his final campaign Brown was inducted into the 1000 point club and was named Third Team All-ACC.

Guillermo Diaz-Arecibo (Puerto Rico) – Former Hurricane point guard Guillermo Diaz has been playing in Puerto Rico for Arecibo for the past two seasons. Last season Diaz averaged 16.8 points, 4.0 assists, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.8 steals. Diaz is currently averaging 10.6 points, 2.6 assists, and 3.9 rebounds per game.  During Diaz’ last season at Miami he was selected second team All-ACC, and topped the 1,000-point plateau, with 1,477 career points.

 Julian Gamble-Brussels (Belgium) -Gamble, a former UM grad (2008-2013) is currently listed on Brussels (Belgium) roster for the 2014-2015 season. Gamble is the third scoring option for Brussels at 9.3 points, and has 2.7 rebounds, 1.0 steals and 0.3 blocks per game. Gamble was a part of the 2012-13 UM team that won the ACC regular season and tournament titles. During his career at UM Gamble average 4.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.0 block per game.

Lawrence Gilbert-Manizales (Colombia) -Lawrence, a former guard-forward is currently playing in Colombia for Once Caldas De Manizales. Lawrence is giving the team spark off the bench averaging 13.5 points in 37 minutes. During his tenure with the Canes, Lawrence played in 20 games scoring a total of 30 points and 26 rebounds.

Malcom Grant- Renaissance Sportive Tanger (Morocco) – Grant, a former point guard for the Canes, is currently playing in Morocco. Grant recently signed a one year deal with Renaissance Sportive Tanger. During the 2013-2014 season, Grant played in Sweden for LF Basket Lulea averaging 10 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game. As a junior for Miami, Grant was named to All-ACC third team and as a senior averaged 10.8 points and 2.1 rebounds for the Canes.

Gary Hamilton-Osaka Evessa (Japan) –The former Hurricanes center is currently playing in Japan for Osaka Evessa, where he is leading the team in rebounds (8.6), steals (2.4), and blocks (1.2) while scoring 5.6 points per game. Hamilton is in the starting role for Evessa averaging 27 minutes. As a Hurricane Hamilton always had one of the highest field goal percentage on the team and during his career he shot 52 percent from the field.

Dequan Jones-AV Cantu (Italy) –Jones, a former forward for the Canes is currently playing in Italy. Jones is shooting over 60 percent, averaging 8.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.0 steals. Jones has is a defensive threat for Cantu leading the team in blocks per game (0.7). During the 2012-2013 Jones played for the Orlando Magic where he played in 63 games averaging 3.7 points as a Rookie. In his career at Miami Jones averaged 4.6 points and 2.4 rebounds in 14.5 minutes.

Kenny Kadji- Trikalla (Greece) -The former University of Miami forward Kenny Kadji currently plays for Aries Trikalla (Greece) of the Greek Basket League. Kadji is currently starting at the center position averaging 14.7 points and 7.7 rebounds. During his final season with Miami, Kadji was named second team All-ACC averaged 12.9 points and 6.8 rebounds for the Hurricanes team that won the ACC regular season and tournament titles.

Anthony King- Artland Dragons (Germany) –King, a former Miami center is currently playing in the Germany Basketball League for Artland Dragons. King has earned a starting position for the Dragons averaging 11.8 points, 5.0 rebound, and 1.3 assists. As a Hurricane King was named ACC All- Defensive selection, ranked second in the ACC in blocks, and fifth in rebounding during his sophomore year.

 Donnavan Kirk-Michelin Etha Engomis Nicosia (Cyprus) -Kirk is a former forward for Miami who has earned a starting spot for Etha at the power forward position. As a senior at Miami, Kirk shot over 40 percent from the field, 7.5 points, and 5.0 rebounds.

Trey McKinney Jones-Gravelines (France) –The former University of Miami three point sniper is currently listed on Gravelines roster. He is providing production off the bench for the Gravelines with 9.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 0.6 steals. In his two years playing for the canes Jones shot 38 percent from distance and 43.6 percent from the field.

Darrius Rice-Maccabi Ashdod (Israel) –Rice, a former forward for the Miami Hurricanes, is currently playing in Israel for Maccabi Ashdod. Rice is providing Ashdod with 3.0 points and is leading the team in rebounding 9.0. At Miami, Rice was a preseason candidate for the Wooden National Player of the Year award and was one of the BIG EAST’s top e-point shooters in the conference.

Durand Scott- Hapoel T-A (Israel) –The former Miami grad (2009-2013) is currently playing in the Israel Winner League. Scott is averaging 7.7 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.3 steals off the bench for Hapoel T-A. In Scott’s senior season with the Canes he was named ACC Defensive Player of the Year, ACC All-Defensive Team, and ACC All Tournament First Team. Scott was on the 2012-13 Hurricanes team that won ACC regular season and tournament titles.
