MTen to Play at USTA/ITA Southeast Regional
The University of Miami men’s tennis team will travel to Athens, Ga., to compete in the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships, which will be held at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex at the University of Georgia from Oct. 16-20.
A total of eight Canes will be participating in both singles and doubles play in the tournament, including seniors Henrique Tsukamoto and Wilfredo Gonzalez, sophomore Bernard Tefel, and five freshmen in Andrew Harrington, Alexander Fahnehjelm, Nile Clark, Christian Langmo, and Piotr Lomacki.
The Hurricanes will face a great deal of competition, as Miami will be one of 15 schools who have players in the main draw or qualifying draw. Opponents include: Florida, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, Mercer, North Florida, South Florida, Stetson and UCF.
Play begins with the qualifying singles at 12 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, as players have to win two matches on Thursday to qualify for the main draw. Three Canes freshmen will be put to the test with Fahnehjelm playing Sam Philp from Mercer, Clark facing Jorge Wilton from Kennesaw State, and Harrington going against Richard Brej from Florida.
The Canes will then all team up and play doubles on Thursday, starting at 5 p.m., with Gonzalez and Lomacki playing against the Ignacio Gonzalez-Muniz and Vadym Kalyuzhnyy duo from USF. Later in the day, Fahnehjelm and Harrington will face Andres Alfonzo and Ricky Ventura from FGCU and Clark and Tsukamoto will team up against Anderson Scarpa and Oliver Snaider from Mercer. Early the next morning, Langmo and Tefel will face the No. 5-8 squad of Diego Hidalgo and Gordon Watson from Florida.
More than 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Divisions I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete in the 2014 USTA/ITA Regional Championships.
In the USTA/ITA Division I Regional Championships, NCAA Division I men and women face off with singles and doubles champions from each of the twelve regions advancing into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, held November 6-9 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, NY.
