Soccer Earns Second Straight Shutout 3-0

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team captured its second consecutive victory Friday night, toppling visiting Stetson 3-0 at Cobb Stadium.

Goals from junior Jasmine Paterson, freshman Ronnie Johnson and junior Ava Ambrose sent Miami to a well-earned decision over the Hatters.

The hosts outshot Stetson 13-1 on the night and drew five corner kicks compared to just one for the Hatters.

Ambrose goal in the 84th minute sealed the win for Miami, who improved to 9-1-0 in the all-time head-to-head history between the two programs.

Junior Emily Lillard (2-3) needed just one save in her second straight clean sheet.

The Hurricanes (2-3-0), who split the first two games of their homestand with FGCU and Jacksonville, will end their four-match stay at Cobb Stadium Sunday. The victory continued an impressive stretch for Miami, who have a 8-2-1 all-time record at home under head coach Mary-Frances Monroe’s direction.

Less than a minute after entering the match as a substitute in the 27th minute, Paterson tallied her first goal of the season on a terrific through pass from freshman Johnson. Paterson, who ranked second on the team in goals as a sophomore, beat the Stetson defense and slotted a ball into the far corner past Hatters keeper Karlie Hightower to give Miami the 1-0 lead.

Miami recorded six shots in the first half and allowed none, but Paterson’s strike was the difference in a 1-0 halftime lead.

Johnson, who led Miami in shots against Jacksonville earlier in the week, once again paved the way with five Friday.

The Ontario native opened her account as a Hurricane after an impressive dribbling sequence in the 65th minute. She beat three defenders individually before a booming strike outside the 18-yard box that made its way past Hightower and into the right side of the net.

Upfield runs from halfbacks Gracie Lachowecki and Maddie Simms kept Stetson (0-4-1) on its heels for most of the night. The Miami backline, largely composed of Lachowecki, Simms, junior Shannon McCarthy and sophomore Gianna Dal Pozzo, have not given up a goal in its last 212 minutes.

Ambrose, who entered in place of Lachowecki late in the second half, delivered a long-range shot from the sideline that curled into the top corner and gave Miami a 3-0 advantage. The goal was the third of Ambrose’s career.

The Hurricanes will return to the field Sunday for a matchup with FAU. Miami topped the Owls 2-1 in last year’s rendition of the crosstown rivalry. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. from Cobb Stadium. Admission is free.
