Canes are 3-0 in Spain after 86-64 Victory
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s basketball team continued its winning ways Wednesday night in Spain with an 86-64 victory over CB Quart in Banyoles.
Four Hurricanes scored in double digits, led by Sheldon McClellan’s 16 points. Deandre Burnett added 15 points while Davon Reed and Ja’Quan Newton added 13 apiece. On the boards, Reed pulled down a team-high eight, as McClellan and Tonye Jekiri each had six. James Palmer notched five assists, added to four from Manu Lecomte and three from Burnett.
In three games in Spain, McClellan is averaging 19.0 points and 5.7 rebounds, followed by Burnett’s 11.3 ppg and Newton’s 10.7 ppg. On the glass, Cruz Uceda has posted 11.3 rpg while Jekiri is at 7.3 rpg.
The Canes hit a Spain-best 65.3 percent (32-49) from the field and 72.0 (18-25) from the free throw line. Miami recorded 18 assists on their 32 made shots, the most assists in a game this trip.
Deandre Burnett started the game by knocking down a 3-pointer, but the Canes quickly fell behind, 9-3. Just five minutes into the game, the Canes tied the score at 16 when Newton converted a 3-point play with a bucket and free throw. After back-and-forth leads, Miami led 21-29 at the end of the first quarter and never looked back.
Walk on freshman Chris Stowell saw his first gametime action on the trip, attempting one 3-pointer in his three minutes on the floor.
Miami wraps up their overseas competition schedule Thursday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. against AEC Collblanc Torrassa, then travels back to Miami on Friday, Aug. 22.
