Newman, Johnson & Wimbley Named All-Americans

NEW ORLEANS – Three members of the University of Miami track and field program were named All-Americans for the 2014 outdoor track & field season.

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Monday the list of those Division I student-athletes who earned USTFCCCA All-America honors for the 2014 outdoor track & field season. Student-athletes were honored for their performances at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships this past weekend in Eugene, Ore.

Alysha Newman earned All-America, first team honors after a seventh place finish in Eugene. The sophomore picked up two points for the Hurricanes at the NCAA Outdoor Championships after clearing 4.15m in the women’s pole vault.

Newman closes out the 2014 collegiate season with several noteworthy accomplishments. The Delaware, Ontario, native earned All-ACC honors after placing second at the conference meet with a mark of 4.20m and set the UM outdoor record when she cleared 4.41m at the Georgia Tech Invitational. Newman was also an All-ACC selection indoors and earned first team All-America honors when she tied for fifth with a school-record mark of 4.35m.

Lea Johnson was among the All-America, second team honorees. The junior finished eighth in Flight 1 and 16th overall in the women’s hammer throw with a mark of 59.90m. Johnson wraps a successful 2014 season that saw her claim the ACC championship in hammer and the ACC indoor title in weight throw. She was also an All-America, second team honoree for the 2014 indoor season.

Shakima Wimbley was Miami’s final All-American, selected to the second team after she placed fourth in Heat 1 of the women’s 400m semifinal and 14th overall with a time of 52.61 seconds. She was also tabbed All-America, honorable mention as a member of Miami’s 4x400m relay team.

The freshman sensation was an ACC outdoor champion in the 200m and in the 4x100m relay, earning All-ACC honors for both events. She was also an All-America, second team selection during an indoor season that saw her win the 200m and 4x400m ACC titles. Wimbley was also selected as the 2014 ACC Freshman of the Year for the indoor season.

Seven other Hurricanes earned All-American, honorable mention: Taneisha Cordell (4x400m relay), Dakota Dailey-Harris (high jump), Jamika Glades (4x400m relay), Alyssa McClure (100m), Amber Monroe (discus), Anthonia Moore (4x400m relay) and Thandi Stewart (800m).

First-Team All-America honors were awarded to those who finished among the top eight in an individual or relay event as part of a team; Second-Team All-America honors went to those who finished between ninth and 16th; and Honorable Mention honors were given to the remaining finishers.
