Hurricanes Announce 2013-14 Award Winners
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Seven Miami Hurricanes student-athletes have been announced as the University of Miami Athletic Department’s 2013-14 award winners.
The 2013-14 University of Miami Athletics student-athlete award winners are: track’s Bassim El-Sabawi (Male Scholar-Athlete, Male Academic Achievement), tennis’ Melissa Bolivar (Female Scholar-Athlete), track’s Connor Adams (Male Service Award), rowing’s Breanna Hayton (Female Service Award), cross country’s Kevin Marsh (Male Underclassman Scholar-Athlete), track’s Lea Johnson (Female Underclassman Scholar-Athlete), and golf’s Carina Cuculiza (Female Academic Achievement).
El-Sabawi, who was honored with both the Male Scholar-Athlete and Male Academic Achievement awards, has run sprints at Miami for four years, earning All-ACC Academic honors multiple times. A native of San Diego, Calif., he is a recipient of the ACC Postgraduate Scholarship and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in biology. El-Sabawi was one of six Hurricanes student-athletes listed in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges for 2014.
Bolivar, the Female Scholar-Athlete, went 16-7 in spring singles play, including a 14-6 mark in dual matches and 10-4 in ACC play. She combined with teammate Kelsey Laurente for a 12-3 doubles record (7-2 in ACC). Bolivar has been named to the Athletic Director Honor Roll and Dean’s List every semester, and has been on the Provost’s Honor Roll in each of the last four semesters.
Adams, the Male Service Award recipient, served as the president of Miami’s Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC). He was a member of the cross country and track teams during his time at Miami. A native of Flower Mound, Texas, he ranks second in UM history in the indoor mile and third in the indoor 3000 meters. He earned a bachelor’s degree in sport administration.
Hayton has established herself as an excellent student-athlete and ambassador for both the engineering and rowing communities. The Victoria, B.C., native earned distinction on the Dean’s List (3.5 GPA), Athletic Director Honor Roll (3.2 GPA) and the Provost’s Honor Roll (3.75 GPA). Hayton is a two-time All-ACC selection in rowing and earned second team All-Region honors following the 2012-13 season. The senior is also heavily involved in Miami’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, serving as one of the ACC representatives for the Hurricanes’ student-athletes. Hayton, one of six Hurricanes student-athletes listed in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges for 2014, graduated cum laude, earning her bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering.
Marsh, a computer science major, ran cross country for the Hurricanes as a sophomore, including the ACC Championships and the NCAA South Regional. Marsh has been a member of the Athletic Director Honor Roll, Dean’s List, Provost’s Honor Roll and Book Buster’s Club in each of the past four semesters.
Johnson, the 2014 ACC Indoor and Outdoor champion in the hammer, ranks second in school history in the hammer in both indoor (20.99m) and outdoor (61.37m). Johnson, a double major in microbiology and immunology, has earned honors on the Provost’s Honor Roll, Dean’s List, Athletic Director Honor Roll and Book Buster’s Club for six straight semesters. She was a 2013 All-ACC Academic selection in both indoor and outdoor.
Cuculiza was inducted into the Iron Arrow Honor Society – the highest honor attainable at the University of Miami – in December. She was also listed in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges for 2014. A 2013 Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team member, the Hurricanes’ golf academic award has been renamed the Carina Cuculiza Award for Academic Excellence.
