@MiamiTrack Excels at LSU Invitational

BATON ROUGE, La. – The University of Miami track and field program had several outstanding performances at the LSU Invitational.

The Canes had multiple student-athletes set new personal-bests and had several performances that ranked among the best in school history, including a new school record.

“I am very proud of our team today,” Miami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem said. “We competed well against very good competition.”

Thrower Carlos Mangum finished fifth in the men’s hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 61.11m. The freshman set a new school record, improving his distance by nears four meters.

Dakota Dailey-Harris won the women’s high jump, clearing a personal-best 1.80m that ranks second in Miami history. John-Patrick Friday also secured a Top 3 finish on the men’s side, placing third with a mark of 2.01m.

“The team is growing and getting better every week,” Deem said. “Dakota had a big breakthrough today which is huge for her confidence. On the men’s side, Carlos and the 4×100 had standout performances.”

Jamika Glades finished second in the women’s 400m hurdles with a personal-best time of 57.50 seconds. The sophomore also placed ninth in the women’s 100m hurdles with a time of 13.89 seconds.

Shakima Wimbley placed third in the women’s 400m dash with a time of 53.24 seconds, while Anthonia Moore earned a fifth-place finish with a personal-best time of 55.12 seconds. Josh Johnson was Miami’s top male finisher in the 400m, placing ninth with a time of 48.83 seconds.

Alyssa McClure finished fourth in the women’s 100m dash with a time of 11.58 seconds. Phillip Dorsett ran Miami’s fastest men’s 100m time this season, finishing second in his heat and ninth overall with a time of 10.58 seconds.

Miami’s women had a pair of student-athletes finish in the Top 3 of the 800m run. Taniesha Cordell led the pair, finishing second with a time of 2:06.87, while Thandi Stewart placed third with a time of 2:07.63.

The Hurricanes had a strong showing in the relays, led by the women’s 4x400m quartet of Thandi Stewart, Shakima Wimbley, Taneisha Cordell and Anthonia Moore. The four women combined to finish second with a time of 3:36.66.

The women’s 4x100m relay team of Kayann Richards, Alyssa McClure, Jasmyne King and Shakima Wimbley combined to finish third with a season-best time of 44.94 seconds.

Miami’s men placed fourth in the 4x100m as Phillip Dorsett, Bassim El-Sabawi, TeQuille Jackson and Josh Johnson combined to finish the race in 40.24 seconds. Their time ranks fourth in UM history.

Jackson finished seventh in the men’s 110m hurdles with a time 14.38 seconds, while El-Sabawi finished 10th in the men’s 200m with a time of 21.27 seconds.

While Mangum set a new school record, all of Miami’s throwers had a successful day at LSU on both the men’s and women’s sides.

Amber Monroe placed second in the women’s discus with a throw of 48.92m, scoring eight points for Miami’s women. The junior also placed third in the women’s shot put with a throw of 15.30m, adding another six points to the women’s team total.

Lea Johnson picked up eight more points for the Hurricane women with a mark of 60.22m that earned her a second-place finish in the women’s hammer throw.

Gian Piero Ragonesi finished second in the men’s shot put with a mark of 16.46m that picked up eight points for Miami’s men. The freshman also scored two points with a mark of 50.41m that earned him sixth place in the men’s discus.

Dailey-Harris was Miami’s top jumper in Baton Rouge, but two of the men also had a solid showing.

Timothy Richardson led a pair of Canes in the men’s long jump, placing seventh with a mark of 7.17m. Friday finished eighth with a mark of 6.94m. Richardson also finished sixth in the men’s triple jump, clearing 13.39m.

The Hurricanes are back in action at the Georgia Tech Invitational on May 16-17. The trip to Atlanta will serve as the final competition before the NCAA East Preliminary on May 29-31.
