@CanesVB's Leaf, Sims Earn All-ACC Academic
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Miami’s Savanah Leaf and Emani Sims were among the 33 student-athletes named to the 2013 All-ACC Academic Volleyball team.
To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 GPA for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career. Leaf was selected All-ACC Academic for the second time, while Sims is now a three-time selection.
“I am extremely proud of Savanah and Emani and their academic achievements,” Miami head coach Jose “Keno” Gandara said. They exemplify what student-athletes at the University of Miami and in our volleyball program are all about. The academic demands at the University of Miami and at the other schools in the ACC are extremely high and to see Savanah and Emani succeed at that level is truly remarkable.”
Leaf and Sims were standouts on the court and in the classroom. They are two of 12 All-ACC Academic selections that also earned All-ACC honors for the 2013 season.
Sims led the team with 153 blocks this season, averaging a team-high 1.32 blocks per set that ranked fourth in the ACC. Her team-leading .345 hitting percentage ranked fifth-best in the ACC, while her blocks-per-set average of 1.32 ranked fourth in the conference. The Glenview, Ill., native earned her second consecutive All-ACC first team selection following the 2013 season. Sims, who has a 3.263 cumulative GPA, is set to graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in advertising. She will play her senior season in 2014 while working towards a master’s degree.
Also a 2013 All-ACC first team selection, Leaf led the Canes with 442 kills, seventh-most in a single season in UM history. She also led Miami with 38 service aces, ninth-most in a single season in school history. The San Anselmo, Calif., native ranked in the top five in the ACC in kills/set and points/set. The junior holds a 3.857 cumulative GPA while majoring in psychology.
