Miami Track Shines at GT and GVSU
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field program had strong performances at two separate track meets Friday.
Hurricane student-athletes competed at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta and the GVSU Next to Last Chance Meet in Allendale, Mich., as they tried to improve their chances of qualifying for an NCAA Regional.
Christian Cook led the Canes at the Georgia Tech Invitational, qualifying for the finals in the men’s 110m hurdles with a personal-best time of 13.97 seconds. Cook, who ran the third-fastest preliminary time, was just behind Miami alumnus Devon Hill, who posted a time of 13.92 seconds.
Lindsi Arrington also shined in Atlanta, placing third overall in the women’s 1500m run with a time of 4:33.69. Arrington’s time was just slower than her season-best 1500m time of 4:33.07, set at the Florida Relays.
Timothy Richardson led the jumpers on Friday, placing tenth in the men’s long jump with a mark of 23’ 3.5”. John-Patrick Friday also competed in the long jump, posting a mark of 22’ 4.5”.
Bassim El-Sabawi competed for the Canes in the men’s 100m dash, posting a time of 11.05 seconds. Kevin Marsh competed in the men’s 5000m run, finishing in 16:45.04.
While the sprinters, jumpers, hurdlers and distance runners were competing in Atlanta, each of Miami’s throwers placed in the Top-5 in their respective events at Grand Valley State University.
Amber Monroe won the women’s discus throw with a mark of 159’ 5”, while Isaiah Simmons finished second in men’s discus with a mark of 165’ 8” and Lea Johnson placed fourth in women’s hammer with a mark of 179’ 7”.
