DES MOINES, Iowa – Two athletes with Miami connections advanced to Sunday’s finale at the U.S. Track and Field Championships.
T’erea Brown ran the third-fastest time in the women’s 400m hurdles to advance to Sunday’s final scheduled for 4:44 p.m. EST. Brown, who ran her race in 55.15 seconds, will not be joined by former Hurricanes standout Dominique Darden on Sunday. Darden was disqualified in her semi-final heat on Saturday.
Devon Hill placed seventh in the men’s 110m hurdles with a time of 13.32 seconds. Hill, who was the ACC Indoor Champion in the 60m hurdles in 2011, advances to Sunday’s semi-final that is scheduled to begin at 3:40 p.m. EST.
Johnny Dutch improved on his 400m hurdles time for the second straight day. Dutch, who ran the fastest time Thursday (49.46) before posting a 48.98 on Friday, finished in 48.21 seconds in Saturday’s final. Dutch, who trains with Miami director of track and field and cross country Amy Deem, is the alternate to represent the United States in the men’s 400m at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow, Russia.
Former Hurricane standout Lauryn Williams retired after placing 21st in the women’s 200m dash. Williams, who was a three-time Olympian, posted a time of 23. 18 seconds. The Olympic Gold Medalist announced her retirement from the 100m dash on Friday and finalized her retirement from the sport following her race on Saturday saying, “That’s all, folks.” Williams plans to become a certified financial planner following the completion of her incredible athletic career.
“That time is not cutting it anymore,” Williams told reporters after her race “I’d rather go out on my own terms than be one of those people who keeps showing up to the races and asking for a favor to get in.”
