Dailey-Harris Shines at U.S. Championships
DES MOINES, Iowa – Two members of the University of Miami track and field program competed at the U.S. Junior Championships Thursday.
Dakota Dailey-Harris placed fifth in the women’s high jump. The freshman cleared an outdoor best 5’ 8.75” (1.75m) to be the highest collegiate finisher in the event.
Tequille Jackson placed 16th in the first round of the men’s 110m hurdles with a time of 14.54 seconds. The freshman, who was three-hundredths of a second behind his personal best of 14.51 seconds, did not advance to the Thursday afternoon’s final round.
While the two current Canes completed their experience at the 2013 U.S. Junior Championships, several athletes with Miami track connections were just getting started.
Olympic Gold Medalist Lauryn Williams advanced to the semifinals in the women’s 100m dash. Williams ran the 10th-best time in premilinaries, posting a time of 11.47 seconds. The three-time Olympian will be among the 16 athletes competing in Friday’s semifinal at 7:30 p.m. EST. Williams will also run in the first round of the women’s 200m dash Saturday at 4:35 p.m. EST.
Johnny Dutch, who trains with Miami director of track and field and cross country Amy Deem, ran the fastest time in the men’s 400m hurdles. Dutch, who ran a time of 49.46 seconds, advanced to the semifinals, scheduled to begin at 8:04 p.m. EST on Friday.
Former Hurricanes All-American Devon Hill is among the competitors in the men’s 110m hurdles. Hill, who was the ACC Indoor Champion in the 60m hurdles in 2011, currently has the 11th-fastest time in the country in the 110m hurdles at 13.38 seconds. The men’s 110m hurdles is scheduled to begin a 4:10 p.m. EST on Saturday.
A pair of former Hurricane hurdlers will compete in the women’s 400m hurdles beginning Friday at 6:45 p.m. EST. Five-time All-American T’erea Brown and 12-time All-American Dominique Darden will both run for the right to represent their country at the World Championships in August. Brown’s time of 54.21 seconds ranks fourth in the country this year, while Darden’s time of 55.70 seconds is ninth in the United States.
