CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 70 University of Miami men’s tennis team dropped their ACC opener at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center with a tough 4-3 loss to the No. 25 Clemson Tigers. The loss drops Miami to 9-5 on the season.
“It was a really hard fought match today by our guys today,” head coach Mario Rincon said. “Omar fought back from being down a set to give us a win on court four, and Marco was almost able to do the same for us in his match. We knew Clemson was going to be tough, but we gave them a great effort and fought them until the end. My hat goes off to Clemson for playing well in the most important points.”
The Tigers barely edged out the doubles point to start off the match. The 11th ranked doubles team of brothers Yannick and Dominque Maden dominated the Canes No. 1 team of Omar Aly and Wilfredo Gonzalez with a quick 8-2 victory. On court three, Miami’s Henrique Tsukamoto and Marco Stancati played very well but ultimately lost 9-8 to Clemson’s Gerardo Meza and Hunter Harrington to clinch the doubles point for the Tigers.
Miami dominated on the court at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, with Gabriel Flores and Wilfredo Gonzalez winning their matches against Meza and Harrington, respectively. Flores gave up only 5 games while Gonzalez only allowed his opponents to win 3 games in their matches.
Diego Soto had a tough loss on court one, losing 4-6, 1-6, to Clemson’s Yannick Maden, who is the 41st ranked singles player in the country. Omar Aly took his match on court four with a comeback win in which he clinched with a third set victory of 6-0.
Miami’s William Albanese dropped his third set, 6-2, to Clemson’s Austin Ansari to tie the match at 3-3. Unfortunately, Marco Stancati also dropped his match on court five, losing in a third set tiebreak, 7-6 (5) that clinched the match for Clemson.
The Hurricanes will take the court again at noon on Sunday, March 17 at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center when they take on conference opponent Georgia Tech.
