Jumpers Highlight Day One at Kentucky Invite
LEXINGTON,Ky. – Senior All-American Samantha Williamsplaced second Friday in the women’s long jump to highlight the opening day ofthe Kentucky Invitational for the Miami track and field program. The two-day meet,held inside the Nutter Field House, is the first official competition for theHurricanes in 2013.
“Hard work definitely pays off,” Williams said. “I was really surprised at myself in how well I did so early, but I suppose all the hard work I put in the fall is coming to fruition. I look forward to a great season.”
Williams, who competed at the JamaicanOlympic Trials last summer, finished second in a field of 22 after posting amark of 5.94m in her third attempt. She bested her previous career indoor markof 5.87m set at last year’s ACC Indoor Championships.
Freshman Dakota Dailey-Davis alsorepresented the women jumpers strong with a score of 1.65m in her first meet asa Cane in the high jump.
On the men’s side, sophomore Innocent Jacobled the group with a third-place finish in the high jump, posting a mark of2.00m. He will continue tomorrow in the meet competing in the 60m dash.
Two freshmen Canes placed inside the topeight in the competitive men’s long jump, with Timothy Richardson ending up in sixth(7.02m) and John-Patrick Friday in eighth (6.99m). A total of four freshmencompeted overall for UM Friday, adding Lea Johnson in the women’s weight throw(11th, 16.81m).
The runners will make their season debutSaturday at Nutter Field House, with Miami scheduled to be represented in sprints,distance, hurdles and relays. Action will begin at 11 a.m. with live resultsavailable here.
