Luigi D’Agord(2006-07)

Coral Gables, Fla. -Born in Freeport, Bahamas, Luigi D’Agord came to the University of Miami in thefall of 2005 as a transfer from the University of Alabama. Before he had begunhis two All-American collegiate seasons at Miami, D’Agord led his Sunset High team to two state championships. He had also been selected to represent theBahamas in the 2004 Davis Cup. During a 2003 USTA Futures event, D’Agorddefeated Notre Dame’s former No. 1 and professional Casey Smith. In the 2003 Decatar,Ill., Future event, D’Agord reached the final round.

As a junior in 2005-2006, D’Agord was selected as the 2006ACC Player of the Year, helping the Hurricanes sweep ACC accolades for the timein league history. D’Agord finished the season ranked third in the nation. Inhis first season as a Cane, D’Agord recorded a 36-5 overall singles record. His35 wins tied him with former UM great Conny Falk for second-most wins in asingle season in program history. Four of his five losses came against rankedplayers. Over the course of the season, he had defeated 23 ranked players insingles competition.

D’Agord’s outstanding season included a perfect 11-0 recordagainst ACC competition, with six-straight wins over Top 15 players, and anappearance in the 2006 NCAA Tournament. In his first appearance in thetournament as a Hurricane, D’Agord won his first two matches in straight sets. Prior to his Sweet 16 appearance, D’Agord had won 21 straight singlesmatches.

In doubles competition, D’Agord went 24-8, including a 19-5mark in the No. 1 position with former UM All-American great Daniel Vallverdu.The pair went 9-2 in ACC play and ranked as high as No. 10 in the nation. Enroute to a quarterfinals appearance in the NCAA Doubles Tournament, D’Agord andVallverdu defeated a pair of top-30 doubles teams. They had won seven straightbefore falling in the quarterfinals.

Carrying momentum from the previous season, D’Agrod posted a28-5 singles record as the Hurricanes No. 1 player and finished the season asthe No. 8 player in the nation. D’Agord’s amazing senior season included aneight game and a 12 game win streak in singles competition. Of his five singlematch loses, three came against top-5 players and one due to an injury.

For the second straight season, D’Agord posted a perfectmark in ACC play (11-0). Included in his victories was one over the No. 2ranked player. Prior to his loss in the Elite Eight of the 2007 NCAATournament, D’Agord had won 16 of his previous 17 matches with his only losscoming in the ACC Tournament at the hands of the No. 2 player in the nation.

In doubles play, D’Agord went 22-8 while postinga nine-match win streak with his primary doubles partner Josh Cohen. The team, playingout of the No. 1 position, finished the season as the No. 5 duo in the country.Together the pair went 9-2 against their ACC competitors. To start ACC play,the duo went 7-0 with a victory over the No. 8 ranked team. D’Agord and Cohenadvanced to the Sweet 16 of the 2007 NCAA Doubles Championship.
