Sims Named ACC Player of the Week Again

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore middle blocker EmaniSims of the nationally-ranked University of Miami volleyball team has beennamed Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, the league office announcedMonday.

Sherecorded 27 kills and 23 total blocks to help the Hurricanes extend theirwinning streak to eight matches. Sims also earned ACC Player of the Week on Oct. 1 afterrecording 32 kills in contests against Duke and Wake Forest.

“Emanistepped it up this week on the road with great attacking and incredibleblocking,” head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch said. “She really helped, alongwith our team’s great defense, to frustrate our opponents. She was also verydifficult to stop offensively.”

Fridayat Clemson, Sims totaled a school-record 16 total blocks in the road win,eclipsing the previous program mark of 13 set in 2009. She also had nine killsin the fourth set on the way to a team-high 16 in the match to record her firstcareer double-double.

The sophomorecontinued her impressive play on Sunday with 11 kills and seven total blocks atGeorgia Tech. Sims did not commit an error in 16 attempts for a .688 hittingpercentage. For the weekend, the middle blocker hit for a .460 clip.

Simsleads the ACC with 72 blocks (1.76/set) in conference matches, while totaling ateam-high 103 in 21 outings this season.

Miami(18-3, 10-1) swept the road trip to Clemson and Georgia Tech for the first timein program history and currently sits atop the league standings. The Hurricanesstayed at No. 24 in the AVCA Poll released Monday, while moving up to No. 17 inthe NCAA RPI.

Itis the fourth time this season a Hurricane has taken the honor, most in theleague. Junior right side Alex Johnson (Sept. 10) and sophomore middle blockerAlexis Mourning (Oct. 8) also received conference recognition.

Afterspending the last two weekends on the road, the Canes will return home to faceVirginia Tech and Virginia at the Knight Sports Complex, a venue UM has posteda 9-0 mark inside this season, on Friday and Sunday.
