Mourning Named ACC Co-Player of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C – Sophomore middle blocker Alexis Mourning of the University of Miami volleyball team has been named AtlanticCoast Conference Co-Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Sherecorded 22 kills and 16 total blocks in two matches over the weekend to helpthe Hurricanes move into first place tie in the league standings.

“Alexishas been a very consistent player for us all season,” head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch said. “She really helped to impact our two big wins thisweekend. On Friday, she led us in kills while hitting an outstanding .440 – thetype production out of the middle that we need from her.  Sunday, her blocking really affected UNC’soffense and was one of the keys to our victory. She was a wall at the net.”

AgainstNC State, Mourning collected a match-high 13 kills to go with six blocks, asMiami snapped the Wolfpack’s 10-match winning streak. She recorded 10 blockassists versus North Carolina on Sunday, a career-best and one short of theschool record set by Ciara Michel in 2004. The Canes had 18.0 total blocks inthe win, tying for the third-most in program history.

For theseason, Mourning is second in the ACC with 1.39 blocks per set and is second onthe Canes with 172 (2.77 k/s) with a .318 hitting percentage.

The sophomorebecomes the third Hurricane to earn the league honor this season, joiningjunior right side Alex Johnson (Sept. 10) and sophomore middle blocker Emani Sims (Oct. 1). Mourning shares the award this week with Sareea Freeman ofFlorida State.

Currentlyon a four-match winning streak, Miami (14-3, 6-1) will travel north to faceMaryland (10-8, 2-5) and Boston College (10-9, 4-3) on Friday and Sunday thisweekend. UM is ranked No. 15 in the nation in the latest RPI release put out bythe NCAA today.
