Miami Rolls Past Presbyterian, 3-0
NORMAL, Ill. – Behind 13 kills from sophomoremiddle blocker Alexis Mourning and .361 team hitting percentage, the Universityof Miami volleyball team swept Presbyterian College on Saturday at the RedbirdClassic on the campus of Illinois State University. The Canes finished the weekend2-1 and move to 6-1 on the season.
“It wasnice to see us get back into our offensive rhythm tonight,” said head coachNicole Lantagne Welch. “We handled the ball well and that allowed us to have abalanced attack. Both of our middles were very effective, and certainly thathelps create nice openings for our pin hitters to take advantage of.”
TheHurricanes won by the scores of 25-15, 25-18 and 25-21 and did not trail at anypoint in the match. UM has now won its last 12 neutral-site contests.
The 13kills for Mourning tied a career-high previously set in the season openeragainst Wofford at the Hurricane Invitational. Junior outside hitter TaylorHollins racked up 12 kills and has put up double digits in the category in allseven matches in 2012.
Defensively,UM out-dug PC 63-41, led by 18 digs from junior libero Ryan Shaffer. Seniorsetter Nrithya Sundararaman, a native of Illinois, put up a match-high 39assists, while sophomore middle blocker Emani Sims, also from Illinois,recorded five block assists.
Presbyterian(1-7), a member of the Big South Conference, was held to a .148 hittingpercentage.
TheHurricanes will next return home to open Atlantic Coast Conference play againstrival Florida State on Friday, Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m. The match will be broadcastednationally on ESPNU.
