Scott Covington hit Daryl Jones with a three-yard scoring pass with 1:37 left and Jay Taylor missed a 53-yard field goal try on the final play as Miami upset 13th-ranked West Virginia, 34-31, in Morgantown, West Virginia. The Hurricanes held a 27-24 lead entering the fourth quarter and protected the advantage for the 119th time in their last 120 with a lead entering the final stanza. Their only loss in that span came against the Mountaineers in the1997 season. It appeared West Virginia might repeat the feat when Anthony Green bulled in from a yard out with just over 10 minutes left to give the Mountaineers a 31-27 lead.
But Miami drove 48 yards in five plays, including a 40-yard run by James Jackson, en route to Covington’s scoring pass to Jones that gave Miami the lead for good. James out gained WVU’s Amos Zereoue rushing for 162 yards on 31 carries. Zereoue, the BIG EAST’s leading rusher in 1997, picked up 113 on 27 carries.
West Virginia’s Marc Bulger had a big day, completing 32-of-43 passes for 380 yards and three scores with one interception, while Covington was 19-of-30 for 247 yards and two scores with one pick.
