FT. LAUDERDALE, FL – The University of Miami football team held practice,including 40 plays of 11-on-11 in a two-hour night practice at Ft. Lauderdale’sLockhart Stadium Wednesday night in conjunction with Broward County Canesfest.
In the 11-on-11, the Hurricanes ran several situational sets which featuredthe passing game. Senior quarterback Scott Covington connected onsix of his 11 passing attempts for a total of 159 yards and a touchdown.Covington’ s touchdown pass came on a 69-yard bomb to sophomore wide receiverReggie Wayne. Wayne led the Miami receivers with three catches for111 yards.
No. 2 quarterback Kenny Kelly was also efficient going 7-10 for 89 yards.Most notably, Kelly connected with senior wide receiver Omar Rolle on a39-yard over-the-shoulders pass and catch.
UM’s defense was led by its defensive line which created a high degreeof pass rush. Sophomore defensive end Brain Stinson and freshmandefensive tackle William Joseph each registered quarterback sacks.The pass rush also forced both Covington and Kelly out of the pocket onseveral occasions.
Prior to the 11-on-11 work, the Hurricanes focused on kickoff returnsand coverage along with individual position drills. Miami returnsto practice tomorrow at 3:30 pm in Coral Gables.
