CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The University of Miami football team held a pair ofworkouts today at the Greentree Practice Field in Coral Gables. Today’sworkouts marked the first fall practices for UM’s returning varsity players

“I thought today’s practices were a great start,” said head coach ButchDavis. “We’ve waited six months just to have this day. Theplayers had the enthusiasm, effort and hustle we like to see on the field.”

Davis appauled the effort of sophomore wide receiver Andre King (Ft.Lauderdale).

“Andre made some big plays today,” said Davis. “He was an unknownquantity last year but he made some great progress during the off seasonand will definitely see some playing time.”

Davis was also impressed with the play of running back Edgerrin James, quarterbacks Kenny Kelly and Scott Covington, linebacker Chris Campbell, and defensive back Al Blades.

“Scott Covington made some big throws down the field, as did KennyKelly; and Edgerrin James looked quick,” Davis said. “Defensively,Chris Campbell and Al Blades made big interceptions.”

Davis announced three position changes in a move to bolster depth.Freshman Ed Wilkins moved from the defensive line to the offensive line, junior Matt Sweeney and freshman Nick Nettles both moved from defenisveend to defensive tackle.

“I like Nick Nettles explosiveness,” said Davis. “I think heis one of the most powerful guys on the team. His quickness is givingour offensive linemen fits just because he is so explosive.”

Offensive lineman Eric Schnupp is out indefinitlyrecovering from reconstructive right knee surgery, following an off seasonsurgery to repair his ACL.
