CORAL GABLES, FL — The University of Miami Hurricanes conducted a closed90-minute practice in shells today at Greentree Practice Field in preparationfor the season opener next Saturday against East Tennessee State.

The Hurricanes used the session as a rehearsal for unique situationsthat can arise during a football game.

“I wanted to take one practice to go over the special situations thatwe could be faced with during the upcoming season,” commented headcoach Butch Davis. “We worked offensively and defensively on suchthings as Hail Mary passes, on-side kicks, fake punts, fake field goals,and other gadget plays. We have to make sure the players are preparedfor any situation and know how to respond.”

Miami will begin its game week routine tomorrow with a 75-minute afternoonpractice in shorts. After a day off on Monday, the Hurricanes willwork out Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in full pads for at least twohours each session. All practices are scheduled for Greentree onthe UM campus.

The Hurricanes open the 1998 season against East Tennessee on Saturday,September 5th in the Orange Bowl at 7:30 p.m. The game will be televisedtape-delay on Sports Channel at 11:30 p.m.

Injury Report: There were no new injuries to report. Defensiveend Derrick Ham and linebacker Michael Smith continue to nurse sprainedankles and wide receiver Santana Moss workout with the team despite a crackedjaw.
