Thandi Stewart Advances at NCAA Championships

DES MOINES, Iowa – Sophomore Thandi Stewart from the University of Miami notched a personal-best time of 56.62 in the 400 meter hurdles on Wednesday at the NCAA Track and Field Championships to advance to the finals in her first appearance on the national stage. Freshman Amber Monroe also represented the Canes, marking a distance of 48.82 meters in the discus throw.

Stewart, who qualified for the Championships with a time of 56.85 at the NCAA East Region Preliminary, continued her impressive season with a second place finish in the third heat of the night. The sophomore will vie for All-America status on Friday at 6:45 p.m. EST, against seven other top competitors from the night.

Monroe also competed at the NCAA meet for the first time with the 48.82 in her first attempt in the discus throw. The freshman set her personal best (51.45) at the Penn Relays on April 26 to take first place at the prestigious event.

Senior All-America Devon Hill will hit the track on Thursday in the 110-meter hurdles with the third-fastest time (13.41) in the nation to his record, looking to win the national title. Junior Samantha Williams will make her debut on Saturday in the triple jump.

ESPN3 will stream all the action from Thursday through Saturday.
