Holmes Leads Canes in Opening Day of ACC Championships

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–The Miami Hurricanes Track and Field team capped off the opening day of the ACC Outdoor Championships with four points behind senior Ashley Holmes’ performance in the hammer throw.

The 2012 edition of the conference championships, held at the University of Virginia’s Lannigan Track, began with the heptathalon and decathalon events followed by men’s and women’s hammer and men’s javelin throw. Holmes tossed the hammer 54.58 meters (179-01) to finish fifth and earned four points.

Senior Rachel Dupree, competing in the Hepathalon wrapped up the day with 2802 points after the first four events can sits in seventh place. Dupree will continue competition on Friday in the long jump, javelin and 800 meters.

The Championships resume Friday at Noon with the Decathlon and Heptathlon at 1 p.m. The field events begin at 3 p.m. with the women’s pole vault and running events at 4 p.m. with the men’s 1500 meters preliminaries.
