CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami men’s and women’s track and field teams finished day one of the Hurricane Invitational at Cobb Stadium with some strong performances in various disciplines. In the last race of the night, sophomore Lindsi Arrington won the 5000 meters with a personal best 17:41.24. In the men’s race, sophomores Luke Fontaine and JaCee Jarnagin also provided quality races, finishing fifth and sixth each with personal best times of 15:29.06 and 15:40.74 respectively.

“I didn’t really have any expectations because I’ve never run a 5K on the track before,” said Arrington. “My strategy was to stay with the leader until she went out or my coach told me to go.”

In the field events, the Hurricanes women came away with four top-five finishes during the afternoon session. Seniors Ashley Holmes and Miranda Wilson finished second and third in the hammer throw with marks of 54.24m (177’-1”) and 48.26m (158’-4”), respectively. Holmes’ throw was a personal best. Freshman Amber Monroe also finished in the top-five placing fifth with a throw of 38.64m (126’-9”). Sophomore Kirsten Myers finished fourth in the high jump clearing 1.50m (4”-11’).

During the morning session, Rachel Dupree won three out of four events on the first day of the heptathlon, leaving her in the lead heading into tomorrow’s final three events. The first event of the heptathlon on Saturday will be the long jump, starting at 9:30 a.m.
