Johansson Earns Gold, Sets New Conference Record

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Miami Hurricanes spectacular run through the Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming and Diving Championships maintained its record pace on Friday night, as junior Sofia Johansson broke the conference record and earned the Canes another gold medal for her performance in the 100-yard breaststroke.

The Ramlösa, Sweden native set a new ACC mark in the event at 59.81 seconds, becoming the first to swim the event in under one minute in conference history. She beat out Florida State’s Melissa Cooper and Duke’s Christine Wixted to earn the gold and pick up 20 points for the Canes.

For their dominant performances in conference championships, Johansson and teammate Kelsi Hall, who took home a gold medal in the 50-yard freestyle on Thursday night, will participate the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships  at the James E. Martin Aquatic Center in Auburn, Ala. beginning on March 15.

The Canes run through the championships has included three trips to the podium over the past two days and a number of impressive performances. Miami currently sits in sixth place (244 points) heading into the final day of competition.

The last day of the championship starts at 11 a.m. with the preliminaries of the 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, and 1650-yard freestyle. Men’s platform diving prelims and finals start at 1 p.m., with the women’s platform prelims starting at 3:45 and finishing with the finals at 8 p.m. The swimming finals start at 7 p.m.
