Freshmen Adams and Jacob beat school records at Birmingham Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Miami Hurricanes track and field team finished off the Birmingham Invitational with an excellent showing in day two after a strong start by Rachel Dupree on day one. Seniors Tarika Williams and Ashley Holmes took home first place in the women’s 200m dash and weight throw, respectively. The men’s 4x400m relay team featuring freshmen Darrell Butler and Christian Cook, and seniors Devon Hill and Brian Laskowski also placed first.
“We had a good outing today, but we will need to continue to improve as a team if we want to be dominant at the ACC Championships,” said Track and Field Head Coach Amy Deem.
In addition to the first place finishes, the women’s side especially excelled with good performances in almost every event. Senior Tameka Jameson placed second in the 400m dash with a time of 56.72 seconds, while freshman Shannon Wright finished with a fourth place time of 57.39 seconds. Sophomore Lindsi Arrington also had a good day as she finished in fourth place in the one mile run with a time of 5:02.03 and finished in the top ten in the 800m run. Freshman Taneisha Cordell placed fourth in the 800m run with a time of 2:18.15. Senior Rachel Dupree returned to action after competing in the pentathlon yesterday and finished fifth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.94 seconds. In the 60m dash, Tarika Williams’ 7.38 seconds came in second place, while sophomore Alyssa McClure also finished in the top ten. Another freshman placed in the top five when Jokira Jiles finished fourth in the 200m dash with a time of 24.87 seconds. Tarika Williams’ 23.94 seconds was good for first place in the event. The women’s team capped off the night with a strong finish as the 4×400 relay team featuring freshmen Shannon Wright and Taneisha Cordell and seniors Tameka Jameson and Jennifer Estime finished in second place with a time of 3:49.57.
The women succeeded in the field events as well, as seniors Ashley Holmes and Miranda Wilson finished in first and fourth place in the weight throw with distances of 17.81m (58-05.25) and 16.43m (53-11.00), respectively. Holmes also finished third in the shot put with a distance of 13.61m (44-08.00). Junior Samantha Williams finished in seventh place in the women’s long jump.
On the men’s side, senior Devon Hill showed his expertise in the 60m hurdles once again by finishing in second place with a time of 7.80 seconds. Freshman Christian Cook also placed in the top ten. Senior Brian Laskowski’s time of 1:54.75 in the 800m run was good for third place, while senior Austin Rector also finished in the top ten.
“Connor Adams in the one-mile and Innocent Jacob in the high jump led the way for our team today, both setting school records. I really like the aggressiveness of our freshmen today,” added Deem.
Two Canes finished in the top five in the one mile run as freshman Connor Adams placed second with school-record time of 4:13.37 and junior Matthew Wilson finished in fifth with a time of 4:21.85. Sophomore Luke Fontaine also finished in the top ten. Freshman Innocent Jacobbroke his own school record that he set at the Kentucky Invitational with a jump of 2.08m (6-09.75). Jacob also placed fourth in the long jump with a distance of 6.98m (22-11.00). The last event of the day for the men was the 4x400m relay, in which Miami finished first with a time of 3:18.39.
