Streaking Canes Face Tough Road Battle at No. 4 Duke

Sept. 21, 2011

CORAL GABLES, Fla. –  The University of Miami women’s soccer team will face its highest-ranked opponent of the season when it heads to Durham, N.C. to take on No. 4 Duke on Thursday night. First kick is set for 7:05 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium.

The Hurricanes (7-1, 1-0 ACC) are coming of their program-record tying seventh straight victory last Saturday over Navy. The 2-1 win also happened to be the third consecutive win in double-overtime for the resilient Canes.

Miami has been led by junior striker Kate Howarth. The Grand Blanc, Mich. is coming off a leg injury that cost her most of her sophomore campaign and is currently leading her team with seven goals and 17 points on the season.

Senior goalkeeper Vikki Alonzo has been equally as impressive in between the posts, as she sports a paltry 0.78 goals against average.

Duke (9-1, 2-0 ACC) is currently on a five-match winning streak since losing to Auburn on Sept. 4. The Blue Devils’ last win came in a 2-1 outcome against then ranked No. 3 Florida State on Sunday.

Standout freshman Kelly Cobb is the Blue Devils’ leading scorer with seven on the season. Duke also has three players with five or more assists on the year.

After the match, the Canes will take a short trip to Winston Salem, N.C. to face off against No. 7 Wake Forest on Sunday. Wake is 8-1-0 on the season and has wins over Florida State, South Carolina and Nebraska.

The University of Miami is also excited to offer a new season ticket package that will include two (2) adult and (3) youth tickets to all home volleyball and soccer events in the 2011 season.  The Family plan provides a family of five with over 20 events for the incredible price of $50.
