Canes Open ACC Play Against Clemson
Sept. 14, 2011
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s soccer team will put its five-match win streak on the line against Clemson in each team’s Atlantic Coast Conference opener on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Cobb Stadium.
Last week, the Canes (5-1) traveled to Ft. Myers, Fla. and played a double-overtime thriller against Florida Gulf Coast. A brilliant two-goal performance from sophomore Tara Schwitter lifted the Hurricanes to their fifth-consecutive win.
During the winning streak, many Hurricanes have played well, but junior Kate Howarth and senior Vikki Alonzo have been exceptional and will look to lead the Canes heading into their ACC schedule.
After six games, Howarth has a team-leading five goals and three assists, with two of those goals being game-winners. Alonzo has made it nearly impossible for opponents to score. In the last five games she has only surrendered a single goal and carries a 0.55 goals against average on the season.
Clemson (5-2) is coming off two losses this past weekend to South Carolina and Furman, snapping their own five-game winning streak. Through seven games, the Tigers’ Maddy Edler has six goals and two assists, good for a team-leading 14 points.
After Clemson, Miami will be on the road for three straight matches, taking on Navy (Sept. 17), Duke (Sept. 22) and Wake Forest (Sept. 25) before returning home on Thursday, Sept. 29 to face NC State.
The University of Miami will host the Canes Residence Life Challenge at the game on Thursday. The residential college that brings the most students to the game will receive a pizza party hosted by the Athletic Department. Students can sign-up their dorm at the main entrance to the stadium.
The soccer program will also welcome all international students to the game. International students can register to win exclusive prizes and also sign up to represent their country in a friendly soccer game during halftime of the match.
The University of Miami is also excited to offer a new season ticket package that will include two (2) adult and (3) youth tickets to all home volleyball and soccer events in the 2011 season. The Family plan provides a family of five with over 20 events for the incredible price of $50. To purchase a Volleyball and Soccer Family Plan call 1-800-Go Canes or buy online.
