HILLSBORO, Ore. – Freshman Ashley Flinn scored a second half goal and the Hurricanes converted on all five of their attempts in a shootout to earn a victory over Portland State at Hillsboro Stadium on Sunday.

Flinn’s unassisted goal came in the 84th minute, tying the game at one. Portland State’s Melissa Trammell scored the Viking’s lone goal thirty minutes into the first half.

Hannah Moehling, Kate Howarth, Ali Brennan, Flinn and Kim Hutchinson each scored on their penalty kick attempts after 90 minutes of regulation.

Senior goalkeeper Vikki Alonzo was credited with seven saves in the contest, but none was bigger than her stop of Portland State’s fourth penalty kick off the foot of Kayla Henningsen.

“Today was another challenging day in which we overcame significant adversity,” said UM’s first year head coach Tom Anagnost. “We struggled adjusting to both the fast, bouncy turf surface and the opponent.  However, I was again very proud of how we finished the game.”

Howarth, Flinn and Brennan led Miami with a pair of shots each, with both of Brennan’s on goal.

“There’s a lot to learn from this game and hopefully we can start how we finished,” said Anagnost. “The last 15 to 20 minutes we were attacking aggressively and playing with urgency.”

The Canes will open their regular season at home on Aug. 19 at Cobb Stadium against the ninth-ranked University of Florida at 7 p.m.

Miami is excited to announce a new season ticket package that will include two (2) adult and (3) youth tickets to all home volleyball and soccer events during the 2011 season.  The Family Plan provides a family of five with more than 20 events for the incredible price of $50.  Purchase a Volleyball and Soccer Family Plan by calling 1-800-Go Canes or buy online.
