Johnson Named Third Team All-America by Associated Press

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami junior guard Shenise Johnson was named Third Team All-America by the Associated Press, as announced on Tuesday. Johnson’s teammate and fellow junior Riquna Williams earned honorable mention recognition.
“I am very excited for Shenise,” said Meier. “She has worked extremely hard to become the best player she can for her team, but she has also become a great leader. She deserves all the accolades she has received this season and along with Riquna has really put Miami on the map.”
Johnson becomes just the second Hurricane ever to earn AP All-America team honors, as Frances Savage was named to the second team in 1991.
The Rochester, N.Y. native was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year after leading the ‘Canes to a 12-2 conference record and a regular season championship. She also was named First Team All-ACC and to the ACC All-Defensive Team for the second consecutive season.
Johnson ended the season as the only player in the ACC to rank in the Top 10 in scoring (2nd, 19.6 ppg), rebounding (5th, 8.3 rpg) and assists (7th, 3.8 apg). The dynamic guard also was named the ACC Player of the Week on three occasions this season.
With her honorable mention nod, Williams joins only Savage, Johnson and Tamara James as the only Miami players to be recognized by the AP. James earned honorable mention recognition in 2003, 2005 and 2006.
Williams was the ACC’s leading scorer at 21.7 points per game. In conference play, her scoring average increased to 24.0 points per game. Known as one of the most explosive guards in the country, Williams was named the ACC Player of the Week four times this season. Her six career weekly nods are the most of all current ACC players.
The backcourt duo became the first Miami pair to garner first team all-conference honors since Savage and Vicki Plowden accomplished the feat in the BIG EAST following the 1991-92 season.
Miami advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004 and with its 80-62 win over Gardner-Webb, earned its first tourney victory since 1993
