Hurricane History in the Super Bowl

Hurricane History in the Super Bowl

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — For the 12th time in the last 13 seasons a former Miami Hurricane participated in Super Bowl Sunday.

Former Hurricanes Antrel Rolle and Kenny Phillips patrolled the New York Giants secondary en route to a Super Bowl title. Additioanlly, ex-Hurricane Vince Wilfork, making his third Super Bowl appearance, all with the New England Patriots anchored the Patriots defensive line. It was Rolle’s second Super Bowl appearance, his first with the Giants. He previously played on Super Bowl Sunday last with the Arizona Cardinals in 2008. As for Phillips, it was his first ever Super Bowl appearance.

A couple other notes about Canes in the Super Bowl:

* The most Canes ever to play in the NFL title game was nine in Super Bowl XXVIII.  The Dallas Cowboys had eight of those UM players, plus head coach Jimmy Johnson, while defeating the Buffalo Bills and UM legend Jim Kelly.

* The second best UM showing came in Super Bowl XXX, which featured six former Canes, including five on the Dallas Cowboys roster. The Cowboys won that Super Bowl over the Pittsburgh Steelers, who featured Leon Searcy.

* Six Canes also played in Super XXXV, which featured the Baltimore Ravens and Ray Lewis easily defeating the New York Giants with Micheal Barrow and Jessie Armstead.

*Two seaosn’s ago (Super Bowl XLV) in Dallas featured former University of Miami graduate Sam Shields, who had two interceptions and a forced fumble during the season to help lead the Green Bay Packers to a Super Bowl title.
