Miami Set to Open Outdoor Season with Hurricane Invitational

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami will welcome 10 universities for the Hurricane Invitational this Friday and Saturday at UM’s Cobb Stadium as the `Canes open their 2011 outdoor track and field schedule.

Among the participating schools this weekend will be Atlantic Coast Conference foes Clemson and Virginia Tech as well as South Florida programs FAU and FIU.

Twelve Hurricane women and two men will be competing Friday, beginning with the first portion of the women’s heptathlon at 9:30 a.m.

Juniors Britney Clarke and Rachel Dupree will be joined by freshman Nicole Cummings in the 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200m dash, before closing the heptathlon on Saturday with the long jump, javelin and 800m run.

Kyla Buckley, Ashley Holmes and Miranda Wilson will also be in action on Friday, opening their season with the hammer throw at 3 p.m.

High jumpers Megan Novinger and Kirsten Myers are also scheduled to get underway immediately following the men’s high jump at 3 p.m.

To close out the day’s events, will be the running of the 5,000m. Charles Michel and Sean Pezzulo will race for the men at 7 p.m., followed by Casey Crist, Brooke Dovell, Caitlin Knapp and Emma Steppe for the women at 7:20 p.m.

Saturday’s individual events begin at 1 p.m. with the shot put, discus and the 4×100 relay.
