Sprinters Advance at Day Two of ACC Championships

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The University of Miami track and field team was set up nicely by its sprinters in the preliminary rounds of the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships at Virginia Tech’s Rector Field House on Friday.

Tarika Williams moved up to fourth place in UM’s 60m dash records with a heat-winning time of 7.34 seconds. The junior also ran the fastest qualifying time in the 200m dash at 23.67 seconds. She will be joined in Saturday’s 60m final by freshman Alyssa McClure (7.43) and in the 200m final by fellow junior Takecia Jameson (24.18).

Jameson also advanced in the 60m hurdles, as she crossed the finish line in 8.33 seconds – the third-best time in the preliminary heats.

The duo of Ti’erra Brown and Thandi Stewart will represent the `Canes in the finals of the 400m dash as Brown claimed the top qualifying time of 54.07 seconds. Stewart finished in 55.14 seconds.

Miranda Wilson finished third in the weight throw with a personal-best mark of 19.32m (63-04.50), while her teammate Ashley Holmes placed eighth at 17.62m (57-09.75). The duo earned a total of seven points to the team score.

Megan Novinger added four more points as she placed fifth in the high jump at 1.70m (5-07.00).

Freshman Lindsi Arrington reached a new personal-best time of 5:02.44 in the mile run, moving into second place in Miami history in the event.

Travis Benjamin and Lamar Miller will be representing the `Canes in the men’s 60m dash final after prelim times of 6.71 and 6.79 seconds respectively.

Reigning 60m hurdle champion Devon Hill will have a chance to repeat in the event as he qualified for Saturday’s final with a time of 7.90 seconds – the second fastest time in the preliminary heats.

The championship’s third and final day of competition will begin at 11 a.m. with the shot put. Running events will get under way at 12 p.m.
