Hurricanes Set for Virginia Tech Elite Meet

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami Track and Field team will travel north to compete in the Virginia Tech Elite Meet this Friday at Saturday at the Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Va.
Friday’s events start at 5 p.m. with the men’s and women’s long jump and the women’s mile run. Things get under way with the women’s high jump at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The `Canes will be joined by other elite teams including Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, NC State, Virginia and Wake Forest.
Junior Travis Benjamin, who last week set a new school record in the 60m dash at 6.70 seconds, will be joined by fellow football players Lamar Miller, Brandon McGee and Nathan Gholston as well as Bassim El-Sabawi and Sean Petty in the event beginning with the prelims, Friday at 6:20 p.m. The finals will be run at 8:10 p.m.
Devon Hill set a record of his own last week as the junior bettered his record time in the 60m hurdles in 7.77 seconds. Hill will joined by freshman Jeffery Lewis in the event this weekend.
For the women, All-American Takecia Jameson will lead a foursome in the 60m hurdles, which includes Nicole Cummings, Britney Clarke and Rachel Dupree. The prelim starts at 5:45 p.m. with the finals at 8 p.m.
Ashley Dukes, the reigning ACC indoor champion in the 60m dash will be joined by junior Tarika Williams – the 60m dash individual champion at the McCravy Memorial in Kentucky last weekend. Williams was also the top-collegiate finisher in the 200m dash as well.
Megan Novinger moved up to second place in the school record books in the high jump last week and will look to improve up on her personal best mark of 1.76m (5-09.25).
