Bosher Named a Lowe's Senior CLASS Award Candidate
Aug. 24, 2010
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Senior placekicker and punter Matt Bosher is one of 30 NCAA football bowl subdivision student-athletes selected as a candidate today for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.
Bosher, who has been named to the Lou Groza Award Watch List, earned first team All-ACC honors as a kicker and second team All-ACC honors as a punter in 2009. He connected on 14-of-16 field goals and ended the season making 12 in a row, which is the second-best streak in school history in a career and in a single-season. He also has made 90 consecutive extra-point attempts, which also is the third-best streak in a career at Miami. He was a semifinalist for the Groza Award as a sophomore in 2008 after going 18-of-20 in field goals and earning second team All-ACC honors.
Bosher has a career success percentage of 88.9 percent in field goals. He enters the 2010 season as the most accurate returning kicker in the nation having made 32-of-36 field goals attempts.
Bosher received his Bachelor’s of Arts in history in May of 2010. He also minored in sport administration and is currently pursuing a second degree. He was named to the 2006-07 ACC Academic Honor Roll and is a member of the University of Miami Athletic Director’s Honor Roll awarded to student-athletes with semester GPAs of 3.2 or better). He is a two-time University of Miami Book Buster(awarded to student-athletes with semester GPA 3.0 or better).
Bosher has been involved in numerous community service activities including the University of Miami Football `Canes on Patrol Program that works with the Broward County Sheriff’s Department to encourage Broward youth to stay in school and out of gang and street related violence. He also has served as a mentor in the Fun 4 Kidz program (paired with Miami-Dade area middle-school students) meeting once a month and talking on the phone once-a-week.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The 2010 candidate class includes 10 American Football Coaches Association Allstate Good Works Team nominees. Nine of the 30 have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better. Five of the candidates were recognized by the College Sports Information Directors of America as 2009 Academic All-Americans, and 10 are members of teams ranked in the USA Today coaches’ preseason Top 25 poll.
Lowe’s, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the Senior CLASS Award winner at the conclusion of the regular season. The candidate class will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
