UM Football Picked to Finish Second in ACC Coastal Division

Greensboro, N.C. – The University of Miami football team was voted to finish second in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Coastal Division by media members at the 2010 ACC Football Kickoff on Mon., July 26, in voting which was announced at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.
After finishing the season 9-4 (5-3 ACC) and advancing to the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando, Fla., the Hurricanes picked up 444 points from members of the working media, while collecting 20 first place votes within the Coastal Division.
Virginia Tech was predicted on 50 ballots to win its fourth ACC crown in just its seventh year as a member of the league. Florida State finished second with 26 votes, followed by Miami (10), Georgia Tech (8), Boston College (2) and North Carolina (2). The Hokies were also tabbed to win the ACC’s Coastal Division, earning 532 points and 62 first-place votes. Miami followed in second place (444 points, 20 first-place votes); Georgia Tech was third (408); North Carolina fourth (379); fifth was Duke (169); and Virginia (126) rounded out the six-team Coastal Division.
A record number of ballots were cast at the Kickoff with 98 media members voting.
In ACC Championship votes, the `Canes received 10 votes, selected to be present in three ACC title games. Miami received nine votes to defeat Florida State for the fifth place points for that particular game, and earned another point for 10th place to take down Clemson.
The ACC Championship game is slated for Sat., Dec. 4, in Charlotte.
UM rising junior quarterback Jacory Harris finished in a tie for eighth place for ACC Player of the Year voting as he collected two points alongside Boston College’s Mark Herzlich.
Florida State senior quarterback Christian Ponder was voted as the ACC’s Preseason Player of the Year. Behind him was Virginia Tech tailback Ryan Williams (16) and quarterback Tyrod Taylor (11), NC State senior quarterback Russell Wilson (6) and North Carolina defensive end Robert Quinn (6).
In all, 12 ACC players received votes for ACC Preseason Player of the Year.
The 2010 ACC Football Preseason All-ACC Team, as selected by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association (ACSMA), will be announced on Wednesday, July 28 on the ACC.com.
