Hurricanes Celebrate Season With Postseason Banquet

CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami women’s basketball team came together with family and friends at Monty’s in Coconut Grove on Tuesday night to celebrate the historic 2009-10 season.

The Hurricanes had plenty of accomplishments deserving of such as celebration, most notably the teams advancement into the WNIT Championship game. It marked the first time in team history that Miami advanced to the finals of a postseason tournament. The 2009-10 year was also the first time that the `Canes won more than one postseason game in program history, compiling a 5-1 record.

Several team awards were presented at the event. Sophomore phenom Shenise Johnson took home honors as the Rebounding and Assist Leader as well as Most Intense Player and Team MVP. Johnson became just the second Hurricane to be named First Team All-ACC and she was the only player in the nation to score at least 19.0 points, grab 7.5 rebounds and dish out 4.5 assists per game this season, she also surpassed the 1,000 point career mark.

Riquna Williams who crushed the school three-point record with 106 made on the year, was awarded the Team’s Most Improved Player. The Pahokee, Fla. native was named Second Team All-ACC and led the team and was second in the conference with 19.6 points per game.

Diane Barnes earned the Strongest Player Award from Andrew Klitch the team’s strength and conditioning coach. Barnes and fellow senior Charmaine Clark were honored with framed jerseys and gave speeches, thanking their team and the staff for their help throughout their career.

Clark, Johnson and Sylvia Bullock were recognized as the team captains and Barnes was also recognized for earning a leadership role throughout the season.

Freshman Morgan Stroman earned the Team Academic Award for holding the team’s best GPA this season, as awarded by Erica Brown the team’s academic advisor.

To close out the night, the team and crowd were shown a highlight film of the season, created by the team’s video coordinator Drew Thomas.
