Miami Faces Challenging 2011 Track Schedule

Dec. 17, 2010

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Amy Deem announced the Hurricanes 2011 track schedule Friday. Featured on the season slate are two home events to be held in Cobb Stadium and the prestigious Penn Relays – taking place in Philadelphia, April 28-30.

The Hurricanes face another tough schedule in the upcoming season but that is the standard at Miami, which intends to build upon his storied history in 2011.

“We are excited about the 2011 track & field schedule,” said Deem. “It allows our teams to compete against some of the best competition in the country as we prepare for the ACC and NCAA Championships.”

In the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships, the Hurricanes saw Ti’erra Brown and Tameka and Takecia Jameson each earn All-America honors in the 400m hurdles – becoming the first collegiate trio of teammates to accomplish the feat in that event.

Brown earned her fifth overall All-America honor with a runner-up finish in the 100m hurdles.

Devon Hill, the standout hurdler on the men’s team, also had a big 2010. He was the ACC Indoor Champion in the 60m hurdles, setting the school record at 7.78 seconds.

The indoor season will begin Jan. 14-15 when the `Canes will take part in the Clemson Quad Invitational before traveling to the Kentucky Invitational Jan., 28-29.

The squads will get an early look at the site of the ACC Indoor Championship facility when they head to Blacksburg, Va., Feb. 4-5 for the Virginia Tech Invitational. The final regular season indoor meet will be the highly-competitive Tyson Invitational on Feb. 11-12 on the University of Arkansas’ campus.

The ACC Indoor Championships (Feb. 24-26) will be held in Blacksburg for the second straight season and the third time since the `Canes joined the conference in 2004.

Last season, Miami’s Hill and Ashley Dukes took home conference championships after winning the 60m hurdles and the 60m dash respectively.

The Hurricanes will then participate in Notre Dame’s Alex Wilson Invitational, March 4-5. The meet will serve as a last chance for individuals to qualify for the NCAA National Championships that take place March 11-12 in College Station, Texas.

Miami opens its outdoor season a week later as it hosts the first of two meets with the Hurricane Invitational, March 18-19.

“Every season, several Olympians and some of the best teams in the nation come down to our home meets,” said Deem. “This season will be no different. It also gives our athletes a chance to compete in front of our fans and supporters at Cobb Stadium.”

The Hurricanes will travel to Orlando to complete in the UCF Invitational, March 25-26, then the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla., April 1-2, before UM returns to Cobb Stadium for the Hurricane Alumni Invitational on April 16.

The ACC Outdoor Championships approach quickly as they will be held April 28-30 in Durham N.C.

The men’s and women’s teams will look to improve upon their 10th and fifth place finishes respectively from a year ago. Tameka Jameson is the only returning individual champion from the `Canes – the rising senior won the 400m dash and was also a member of the champion 4×400 relay team.

The Penn Relays – a national tradition – will be held at the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field, April 28-30.

The preliminary rounds of the NCAA Championships will be held in Bloomington, Ind., May 26-28 before moving to Des Moines, Iowa June 8-11 for the final rounds.
