Coral Gables, Fla. – The University of Miami swimming team returns to the Norman A. Whitten University Center Pool on Sat., Dec. 4, playing host to Vanderbilt University in a dual meet set to begin at 11 a.m. Admission to the event is free.
Miami (4-1) is competing in its first home meet since Oct. 15 when they played host to cross-town opponent FIU. The `Canes will be competing in just swimming events on Saturday as the UM diving team competing in the Texas Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame Invitational in Austin, Texas. This will be the first meeting for UM against the Commodores in the Shefchunas era.
“I’m excited about our meet with Vanderbilt,” UM swimming head coach Christie Shefchunas, now in her fifth year at the helm in Coral Gables. “We had such a successful meet at the Georgia Tech Invitational, breaking seven school records and taking nine NCAA `B’ cuts, and the girls have a new confidence and realization that the `U’ is back. I’m excited to keep the momentum rolling and see what we can do in our last meet before the winter break.”
Miami is coming off a fourth place finish in the Georgia Tech Invitational two weeks ago in Atlanta. In that meet, the `Canes finished ahead of all Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponents. Miami’s seven school records at the Georgia Tech Invite was just two off the UM record for school marks in a single meet – with the record being nine set at the 2009 ACC Championships, also under the guise of Shefchunas.
Overall in dual meets, Miami has won seven of its last eight meets, and has won all six meets against single opponents dating back to last season. The 4-1 start for the `Canes this year is the fastest start for the team since 2007-08 when they began the 5-1.
In its last head-to-head meet, Miami won a meeting with the Houston Cougars and set nine pool records a day prior at Rice University. Both meets took place in Houston, Texas.
Swimmers Sofia Johansson, Annika Saarnak and Whitney Stephenson headline the event, while the 400 free relay squad will be seen in action as well, finishing the 13-event competition.
Results of the meet will be posted to the UM Athletics website following the conclusion of the final event.
