Mejia and Rizzolo Shift Focus to Doubles at ITA Championship

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif.– The University of Miami women’s tennis team began competing at the 2010 ITA/Riviera All-American Championships on Saturday, with junior Gabriela Mejia and freshman Kayla Rizzolo both failing to make it out of the prequalifying singles singles round at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
In her first career appearance at the ITA fall tournament, Rizzolo dropped a second round match-up with USC’s Kaitllyn Christian, 7-6 (4), 6-1, while Mejia fell to Pamela Escobedo, 6-4, 6-3 in the day’s opening round.
The pair’s run at the at the ITA’s isn’t over however, as Rizzolo and Mejia will team up to play qualifying doubles on Sunday.
In addition to Rizzolo and Mejia, junior Anna Bartenstein will play Danielle Lao in qualifying singles, while senior Bianca Eichkorn will wait and eventually compete in the tournament’s main draw after the qualifying rounds are completed.
Eichkorn will also team with Bartenstein in the main draw doubles bracket.
