Hurricanes Fall To No. 25 Georgia Tech, 78-73

The University of Miami women’s basketball team fell in overtime to the No. 25 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 80-73 Wednesday night at the Alexander Memorial Coliseum.

Georgia Tech’s (17-5, 3-3) Brigitte Ardossi tied a career-high with 29 points and grabbed a career-best 17 rebounds. Six of the rebounds came on the offensive glass and kept the ball away from the Hurricanes late in the overtime period.

In all, the Yellow Jackets pulled down 56 rebounds, compared to only 35 for Miami (14-6, 2-4). The `Canes were outrebounded 23-8 on the offensive end – leading to a 23-6 advantage on second-chance points.

Down by six with 2:17 remaining in regulation, Riquna Williams and Shenise Johnson scored nine points – with Johnson hitting two free throws to tie the game at 65 with four seconds to go. Regulation ended before Georgia Tech could get off a final attempt.

In the overtime period, Ardossi scored six points, but more importantly the home team grabbed six offensive boards that led to eight second-chance points.

R. Williams ended the night with 19 points and a game-high four steals, while senior Diane Barnes was the only other Miami player to score in double-figures with 12 points. Morgan Stroman grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, adding five points. The freshman from Hopkins, S.C. also rejected a career-best four shots.

In all, Georgia Teach was 28-of-37 from the free throw line while the `Canes were only 7-of-17.

Miami led 13-0 just 2:22 into the game and led by as much as 15 points in the opening half before foul trouble led to a Georgia Tech comeback.Ā Johnson and R. Williams each had nine points at the break but Johnson was only able to play 10 minutes after she picked up her third foul.

The Hurricanes headed into the half with a 28-26 lead. The Yellow Jackets were fueled by 12-of-15 shooting from the free throw line. Tech’s Ardossi led all players with 10 points in the opening frame.

The Hurricanes remain on the road for their next game – at Boston College on Sunday, Jan. 31st.Ā Miami returns to the BankUnited Center on Thursday, Feb. 4 against the No. 14 North Carolina Tar Heels.
