No. 25 Miami Sweeps ACC Women's Basketball Weekly Honors

Jan. 11, 2010

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Miami sophomore Riquna Williams and freshman Morgan Stroman earned this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week honors for the period ending Jan. 10. Williams’ 27 points and Stroman’s six-of-seven free throw shooting proved invaluable in the Hurricanes sealing a 78-70 victory over No. 13/11 Florida State on Sunday in the BankUnited Center.

Williams, the ACC’s leading scorer, kept her high-level of play alive as she scored 27 in Miami’s upset win against the visiting Seminoles. The sophomore guard hit three 3-pointers in the win, including two-straight, forcing FSU to call a timeout less than two minutes into the game. Then, with 27 seconds remaining in the first half, Williams stripped the ball and raced down the court to tie the game going into the break. In the win, Williams added one assist, one block and two steals.

In addition to leading all league players with an average of 22.4 points per game, Williams sits atop the ACC charts with an average of 3.3 three-pointers made per contest. The Pahokee, Fla., native also ranks second in the ACC in minutes played (31.3), seventh in free throw percentage (79.7), and ninth in steals (2.1).

In Miami’s first win over a top-15 opponent since December 19, 1991 (No. 10 Purdue), Stroman scored 14 points, her fifth double-figure scoring effort of the season. In addition, the 2009 McDonald’s All-American added five rebounds, three steals, and went six-for-seven at the charity stripe. All five of her boards came on the offensive end, extending possessions for Miami.

Stroman, a forward from Hopkins, S.C., currently leads all ACC rookies in steals, averaging 2.0 per game, and ranks third among active league newcomers in rebounding (6.4 rpg).

Also, for the first time since February 23, 2004, Miami is ranked among the AP Top-25, after improving to 13-2 (1-0) on the season. UM is currently ranked 25th in the poll, but will have little time to relish in their accomplishment as they face No. 7 Duke Thursday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. at the BankUnited Center.
