`Canes Fall to Florida State in ACC Opener

CORAL GABLES, Fla. –
The University of Miami women’s soccer team was unable to find the back of the net in its 2-0 loss to a 13th-ranked Florida State squad in each teams Atlantic Coast Conference opener Sunday afternoon at Cobb Stadium.
Seminole goals in the 12th and 89th minutes were the difference in Sunday’s match, but the Hurricanes had opportunities to get on the scoreboard themselves – especially in the second half.
“FSU is a good team and I give them credit for disrupting our rhythm from the start,” said head coach Tricia Taliaferro.
Florida State’s first goal came off the foot of Tori Huster. Kassey Kallman crossed the ball into the right side of the box and Rachel Lim tapped it to Huster, who finished the play with a shot into the left side.
Miami’s (6-3-1, 0-1-0 ACC) offensive pressure was evident after the break, as it forced all six of the game’s corner kicks and fired seven of its nine shots in the later frame.
Freshman Tara Schwitter had a blast from the right side of the goal midway through the second period, but Florida State’s (6-2-0, 1-0-0 ACC) Kelsey Wys was in proper position to make the save.
Minutes later, the Hurricanes’ leading scorer – Brittney Steinbruch – got to a loose ball in the opponent’s end and fired a shot from 20 yards out from the left side that sailed just high.
For the match, each team recorded nine shots – with Steinbruch leading the `Canes with two. Vikki Alonzo and FSU’s Wys each made three saves, but the match’s big discrepancy came in fouls. UM was whistled for 19 while the `Noles were only called out on five occasions.
The visitors closed out the game with Amanda DaCosta’s goal with just over a minute left to play.
“We are a hungry team and will improve from this tough loss,” added Taliaferro. “I believe 100 percent in us and know we will rebound stronger. This conference is a fierce battle of 10 games and this is just the start. We are a resilient group and expect better.”
The Hurricanes return to the pitch on Friday, Oct. 1 when it travels to South Carolina to take on Clemson at 3 p.m. Miami’s next home match will be against Duke on Oct. 7.
