WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. –

The University of Miami soccer team (1-1-1, 0-0 ACC) scored a first half goal, but the Purdue Boilermakers (1-1-1, 0-0 Big Ten) countered in the second, as the match ended in a 1-1 draw, Friday night at the Varsity Soccer Complex.

Sophomore Kate Howarth scored her team-leading second goal of the season on a feed from Ali Brennan, into the bottom left corner of the net.

The ‘Canes lone score came in the 15th minute.

Miami goalkeeper Vikki Alonzo made nine saves on the night, but none bigger than her stop against Purdue’s Kellie Phillips in the 55th minute. Phillips drew a foul in the box and was awarded a penalty kick. Alonzo made a save on the attempt to preserve the one-goal lead.

“We showed a lot of determination to get through two overtimes against a good team on the road,” said head coach Tricia Taliaferro. “Vikki stepped up for us tonight. She really did a great job.”

Unfortunately, the Boilermakers broke through in the 79th minute. On a corner kick, Purdue found the back of the net on a Lauren Montenegro shot.

Even though Purdue outshot the ‘Canes, Brittney Macdonald and the Hurricane defense forced their opponents into many forced shots and limited quality scoring opportunities.

Howarth narrowly missed on her second goal of the evening, a diving header late in the contest.

Howarth and Brittney Steinbruch led Miami with multiple shots, Howarth recorded five while Steinbruch fired four.

Prior to the season, the Hurricanes teamed-up with UM alum Kristen Kenney’s MALAIKA FOR LIFE organization in Scoring Goals to Save Lives. The premise of the initiative sees the soccer program donate $10 to the charity for every goal scored throughout the season. Howarth’s goal increases this season’s total to $80.

With an even record after the first three games of the season, the Hurricanes will play their home-opener on Tuesday, Aug. 31 at Cobb Stadium at 7:30 p.m. against intrastate foe Florida Gulf Coast.
