GREENSBORO, N.C. – In the final day of the NCAA East Preliminary Round, the University of Miami Hurricanes saw Cory Nelms and the men’s 4×100 Relay break school records and a total of nine student-athletes advance to the NCAA National Championships, Saturday at Irwin Belk Track.

“I am very proud of our teams this weekend,” said Director of Track and Field Amy Deem. “Everyone stepped up and competed extremely hard.”

Cory Nelms’ senior season has been his best. In the national quarterfinals of the 110m hurdles, the Neptune, N.J. native set a school record in winning the first of three heats with a time of 13.65 seconds.

Nelms had already advanced to the NCAA Championships earlier in the day, as a member of the 4×100 relay team. Running the first leg, followed by DeMarcus Van Dyke, Travis Benjamin and Brandon McGee, Nelms and his team broke their own school record – placing third in the third and final quarterfinal heat at 39.57 seconds.

“The men’s team breaking two school records en route to the NCAA National Championships is a huge step in building our men’s program,” added Deem.

Ti’erra Brown set a school record on Friday in the 400m hurdles as she advanced to the national championships. On Saturday, she advanced to Eugene in the 110m hurdles, as she ran the second-best time of the day in the quarterfinals in 12.76 seconds.

“Our weekend was highlighted by the hurdle performances, adding to the great hurdle tradition here at Miami,” said Deem.

After the women’s 4×100 narrowly missed out on advancing to Eugene, the 4×400 team of Tameka Jameson, Brown, Takecia Jameson and Charlene Fuller ran a season-best 3:34.33 – moving on to the NCAA National Championships in the last event of the East Preliminary Round.

With her second-best effort in the triple jump this season at 13.14m (43-01.50), senior Deandra Doyley secured a spot at the national championships, after coming up just short in the long jump on Thursday.

In all, Miami will send 11 student athletes in eight events to the NCAA National Championships to be held in Eugene, Ore., June 9-12.
