Ti'erra Brown Sets School Record in 400m Hurdles

May 28, 2010

GREENSBORO, N.C. –  Ti’erra Brown shattered the University of Miami record in the 400m hurdles and led a trio of women who advanced to the NCAA National Championships in the event in the second day of action at the NCAA East Preliminary Round at Belk Track on Friday.

It only took 54.74 seconds for Brown to circle the track in the 400m hurdles. When it was over, she had set the school record and had the top time in the quarterfinals. However, Brown will not be alone when she travels to Eugene, Ore. for the NCAA national Championships. Twin sisters Tameka and Takecia Jameson ran times of 55.73 and 57.64 seconds and also finished among the top-12 women – advancing along with Brown.

Earlier in the day, Brown ran the third-fastest time in the 100m hurdle first round, advancing to Saturday’s 7:20 p.m. quarterfinal with a time of 12.88 seconds.

Kristy Whyte also punched her ticket to the NCAA National Championships in Eugene, as her time of 11.43 seconds in the 100m dash was among the top-12 in the quarterfinal round. On Thursday, the Pembroke Pines native ran an 11.40 second first round to advance to the quarterfinal.

With his second-fastest effort of the season, senior Cory Nelms moved on to the national quarterfinals of the 110m hurdles, to be held tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. The Neptune, N.J. native ran a 13.86 second race in Friday’s first round, the fifth-best time of the day.

If Nelms finishes in the top three in one of the three quarterfinal heats on Saturday, or is among the next three fastest times – he will advance to his first NCAA Outdoor National Championship.

He may also advance as part of the 4×100 relay team, tomorrow at 6 p.m. Nelms is among a pool of six sprinters, including Travis Benjamin, DeMarcus Van Dyke, Lamar Miller, Devon Hill and Brandon McGee – of which four will compete Saturday in the quarterfinals.  The top three teams in the each of the three heats, plus the next fastest three times will advance to the National Championships.

Both of the women’s relays will follow the same format as the men. At 6:15 p.m., the 4×100 team will compete, made up of four of the following women; Whyte, Ashley Dukes, Charlene Fuller, Tarika Williams and Takecia and Tameka Jameson.

The 4×400 team will race at 9:45 p.m. and will be comprised of four women among Brown, Williams, Whyte, Fuller and Takecia and Tameka Jameson.
