ORLANDO – The University of Miami track and field teams sent a small contingent to the UCF Twilight in Orlando at the UCF Track and Field Complex on Thursday. Unfortunately, the meets was forced to end prematurely after rains would not let up.

Due to the weather, Brian Laskowski and Austin Rector were unable to compete in their scheduled 800m run.

However, in the women’s pole vault, sophomore Allison Higbee reached a new personal best mark and along the way, moved into a second-place tie in the school record books. Her vault of 3.20m (10-06.00) matched Lauren Stewart’s 2006 mark. Fellow sophomore, Lauren Phipps reached a mark of 3.05m (10-00.00).

Jason Johnson competed in the long jump, placing fourth with a leap of 6.57m (21-06.75).

On Saturday, May 8, the Hurricanes will send seven more student-athletes to the Georgia Invitational in Athens, Ga.

The men will be represented by senior Cory Nelms. The ACC Champion in the 110m hurdles will compete in both the 110 and 400m hurdles.

For the women, Kristy Whyte and Charlene Fuller will race in both the 100 and 200m dashes. Whyte, who placed fourth in the 100m and seventh in the 200m at the ACC Championships has run the fastest time of the season of any Hurricane in the 100m dash at 11.38 seconds.

Twins Takecia and Tameka Jameson have entered in both the 100 and 400m hurdles. Both women will be looking to improve their national ranking in the events in an effort to qualify for the NCAA Regional Championships.

Competing in the long and triple jumps will be senior Deandra Doyley and Brittni Finch. Doyley, who at the ACC Championships two weeks ago, became the first Hurricane to earn all-conference accolades at four championships since Miami joined the ACC in 2005. The Miami Lakes native also has team-high marks in both jumping events at 6.30m (20-08.00) and 13.22m (43-04.50).

Field events are set to start at 9 a.m. in Athens, Ga. with the running events scheduled to get underway at 12:15 p.m.
